When The Spirit Hovers
This powerful message invites us to reconsider what we truly celebrate on Pentecost Sunday. While the church has faithfully honored Easter and the resurrection, we often overlook the birthday of the church itself—the day when God poured out His Spirit upon humanity as promised in Joel chapter two. The sermon walks us through a profound progression: the Holy Spirit with us, drawing us to salvation; the Holy Spirit in us, dwelling within when we surrender to Christ; and the Holy Spirit upon us, empowering us for supernatural living. What stands out is the beautiful parallel between Genesis chapter one and Acts chapter two. In both instances, the Spirit of God hovers over chaos and wasteland, waiting for an opportunity to transform destruction into paradise. Just as God spoke and creation burst forth with life, so the Holy Spirit waits in our lives—ready to turn our personal wastelands into gardens of abundance. The message challenges us to understand that Jesus walked as the Son of Man to show us what a Spirit-filled life looks like. Before His baptism and the Spirit descending upon Him, He performed no miracles and preached no sermons. This reveals a crucial truth: it is not by our might or power, but by His Spirit that we accomplish anything of eternal value. We are reminded that receiving power is not the end goal—it is the means to becoming witnesses who demonstrate God's power in our everyday world, whether at the gas pump, the grocery store, or our workplace.
